Emergency Eye Care
Possible Signs of Eye Emergencies
Your eye consultant should regularly examine any changes to your vision or eyes because certain eye symptoms can indicate the need for emergency care.
In addition, some eye conditions may not have noticeable symptoms. This makes it important to have regular eye exams, as many eye conditions can be effectively treated when identified early.
The following symptoms may indicate an emergency requiring immediate medical attention:
Black spots or flashes of light
Curtain-like disappearance of vision
Eye injury or pain
Seeing halos or rainbows around light
Loss of peripheral (side) vision
Sudden hazy or blurred vision
Sudden vision loss in one eye
Red, crusty or swollen eyelids
The following symptoms may not be emergencies but still require examination from your eye doctor:
Blurred or double vision
Excessive tearing or watering of your eyes
Itchy, burning, or dry eyes
Difficulty seeing in dark environments
Seeing spots or ghost-like images
Light sensitivity
Eye strain and/or frequent mild headaches
